What do the ingredients do?
Shea butter: Contains linoleic, palmitic, stearic, and oleic fatty acids - ingredients that balance oils on your skin. It also has vitamins A, E, and F, which promote circulation and healthy skin cell growth. Its high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids make it a great product for smoothing, soothing, and conditioning your skin and locking in moisture. Safe for all skin types, it is moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and may help prevent acne, stretch marks, scarring, fine lines and wrinkles as well as help soothe conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Using shea butter on your skin gives you added sun protection – it contains an estimated SPF of 3 to 4.
Coconut oil: This is a moisturizing power. About 65% of coconut oil’s composition is medium-chain fatty acids like lauric acid and linoleic acid, which is why coconut oil is so beneficial to your skin. It soothes dry skin, helps treat mild wounds, hydrates skin and it can kill harmful microorganisms (effectively kill bacteria and fungi). It also has anti-inflammatory properties - which help reduce inflammation for many different types of skin disorders, including psoriasis, contact dermatitis, eczema and acne. Coconut oil also helps protect your skin from the sun - it has an estimated SFP factor of 7.
Zinc oxide (non-nano): Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only two sunscreen ingredients categorized as safe and effective by the FDA in the States and the safest ingredients for our skin and the environment you can get when it comes to sun protection. In addition to offering protection against broad spectrum ultraviolet rays (UVA/UVB), zinc oxide helps lower skin inflammation associated with rashes, allergies or irritation; it provides protection from skin cancer/neoplasia (basal cell carcinoma), improves wound healing and prevents bacterial infections. It also aids the recovery of burns and damaged tissue, helps treat acne, lowers inflammatory dermatoses (including rosacea), keeps moisture locked in and prevents aging of the skin.
Zinc oxide can be nano (super small particles) or non-nano (bigger particles). When it comes to sun protection, the bigger the particle size the better. Why? Because of the way nanoparticles act on your skin. When you apply sunscreen with nano zinc oxide, the super-small particles can penetrate your skin cells and end up in your bloodstream (and even in your lungs). In addition, the coral reefs can also ingest these tiny particles when the sunscreen washes off in the ocean. This is why I use non-nano zinc oxide.
Lemon essential oil: Lemon essential oil, derived from the peel of the citrus fruit, can help fight inflammation and free radicals that can contribute to acne and photoaging. It is used for its purifying, sebum-regulating and rejuvenating properties. It regulates sebum production, fights acne breakouts, purifies, fades blemishes and illuminates the skin. Lemon essential oil is an anti-inflammatory and its antimicrobial ingredients can help you boost your mood, find mental clarity and reduce stress. Research suggests lemon essential oil may help with depression and anxiety, among other health and wellness benefits.
Pomegranate seed oil (Punica Granatum): Pomegranate seed oil is rich in fatty acids including linoleic acid (29%) and oleic acid (10%), polyphenols, potassium as well as vitamins and minerals. It has a wide variety of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. It helps improve skin elasticity, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and soothes sensitive and irritated skin.
The high concentration of natural antioxidants protects the skin from the danger posed by free radicals. Furthermore, it regulates sebum production and prevents the appearance of acne, as well as treats eczema, psoriasis and sunburn. It has moisturizing properties that help revitalize and rejuvenate the skin.
