Hot coss buns

Perfect Easter treats. This recipe is made with wholemeal flour.

Hot coss buns

Preparation: 15 minutes

Baking: 20 minutes

Makes 10 buns


Ingredients:


For the buns:


  • 250g wholemeal flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 cup raisins

  • 1/2 cup organic milk

  • 3 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons organic unrefined virgin coconut oil, melted

  • 1 organic egg

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Zest of half 1 small orange

  • 1 additional egg, whisked - to brush the buns.


For the cross:


  • 4 tablespoons of white unrefined flour

  • water



Method:


  • Preheat the oven to 180 C (355 F).

  • Mix the dry ingredients and raisins together in a large bowl.

  • Mix all the other ingredients together in another bowl.

  • Combine both mixtures and fold through until just combined.

  • Dust a clean surface with flour and turn the dough out onto it.

  • Divide the dough into 10 pieces and form into round buns.

  • Place the buns on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

  • Brush the top of the buns with the additional egg.

  • For the cross, mix the flour with just enough water to make a thick paste. Spoon the paste into a piping bag with a small nozzle and pipe a cross on the buns.

  • Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
